Survivor Stories, Tyriel

“Future model” Tyriel, age 3, is very proud of her new outfit and purse, compliments of an area church. Her mother, Carshell, and her brother Tyrion, age 8, arrived in Dallas after several harrowing days in Louisiana’s Superdome. They lost everything following Hurricane Katrina. She, her mother and extended family struggled to stay together during the evacuation period and were grateful that most arrived together safely in Dallas.

Carshell and her children now stay in one of the Roseland Apartments in East Dallas. “Arriving in Dallas at Reunion Arena was a relief,” she says. “When we got off the bus, people were so kind, asking us what we needed and what they could do for us. They fed us and gave us clean clothes and Dallas Housing staff was there to get us a place to stay.” Carshell’s mother, Angeline, who is also staying temporarily at Roseland, agrees. “People have really welcomed us,” says Angeline.

“We are so grateful to be here, together and safe. I hope everyone knows how much we appreciate everything they have done for us.”

Carshell’s son, Tyrion, has already started school and according to his mother, is adjusting well. And although Carshell hasn’t yet decided if she will stay in Dallas or return to New Orleans, she plans to use DHA employment services to find a job.
