DHA implements initiatives to assist families with the transition from renting to owning their own home. With the assistance of the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program and the Resident Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) grant, public housing residents have taken advantage of opportunities which lead them to achieve “the American dream.”
To qualify for the homeownership assistance current residents must meet the following criteria:
- Enrolled in or a graduate of the FSS program(only applies to 2003 ROSS grant assistance for closing costs)
- In good standing with DHA for the past 12 months
- Attend a first-time homebuyer’s education class and obtain a Certificate of Completion (class must be HUD certified)
- Complete all requirements and conditions established by a credit counseling agency
- Annual income of $17,000
- Acceptable credit for loan financing
- Ability to qualify for FHA, VA or conventional financing based on credit and income (no lease-purchase or contract for deed financing allowed)
- Have a personal savings or checking account
