Job Title: HOUSING INSPECTOR

Salary Range: $29,880 – $44,820 Annually

Under general supervision, inspects private market housing units selected for participation in the Section 8 programs; inspects units for compliance with all building and construction codes, City regulations; records and reports all deficiencies including any health and safety issues. Inspects private market housing units selected for participation in the Section 8 programs; inspects units for compliance with all building and construction codes, City regulations, and with the building plans. Assesses the physical condition of the sites, building systems and exteriors, common areas and dwelling units; records and reports all deficiencies including any health and safety issues; notifies landlords of conditions of property with a detailed list of inspection failures. Maintains inspection records, associated filing systems and enters data into computer systems. Collects and summarizes data and generates periodic reports. Explains nature of DHA programs, procedures and services to clients. Performs clerical and administrative duties, including data entry, preparing and processing various documents, and maintaining files. Updates and maintains client database. Coordinates and schedules meetings and appointments as requested Knowledge of DHA organization, operations, policies and procedures. Knowledge of residential and multi-family building codes, maintenance and health standards, and HUD HQS inspection procedures. Knowledge of Federal, state and local building, zoning, housing and safety laws, rules ordinances, codes and regulations. Knowledge of the principles and practices of the construction industry and building trades. Knowledge of building construction methods and materials. Knowledge of basic principles of record keeping, case files and records management. Skill in interpreting and applying statutes, rules, ordinances, codes and regulations. Skill in maintaining accurate inspection records. Skill in detecting substandard materials and workmanship. Skill in establishing cooperative working relationships with employees and the general public. Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software. Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written. Associate’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering or a related filed; AND two (2) years experience in the building trades; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Housing Quality Standards Certification required. Valid Texas State Drivers License required.
